The windows and door of historic buildings form an important feature of design which it is essential to retain if at all possible.
Problems arise from many causes. Often the onset of timber decay results. Sometimes problems are because movement or distortion of the frame or opening light or sash has happened. Sometimes this may because the building has moved, but more often is owing to lack of maintenance of the putty around glazing or the paint coverings.
Sticking can be because of distortion or paint build-up.
Whatever the problem, we can resolve it.
At Corbel our philosophy is to conserve as much of the original fabric as possible and repair rather than replace if possible.
Of course we can supply and fit new doors in Oak and other timbers or windows in seasoned hardwoods or Green Oak as appropriate.
We recommend retaining the original timbers if possible because the quality of the historic timber is generally superior and repairing using a combination of traditional carpentry techniques and state of the art timber repair resins.
We can save the majority of windows or doors, no matter how decayed they look.
Glazing repairs: can be made in both modern glass and wher permitted normal or slim-lite double glazing.
We can use Crown glass, Geogian, Etched or patterned glass, leaded panes in diamond or square-set or in metal frames are no problem.
We have been commissioned to design and make Georgian fanlights with leaded cames.
We have been entrusted with repairs to the glazing and frames/glazing bars of stained glass and plain-glass church windows. We are happy to remove and replace iron glazing bars with Phosphor-Bronze.
We have supplied and fitted stainless-steel window guards to church windows.
Sash-windows often require maintenance and our refurbishment service is very competitive. Sticking and non-opening sashes can be made to work. Sash-cords can be replaced and sash weights and other working parts are refurbished or replaced as necessary. It is also feasible to fit draught-proofing to sash windows and we use a brush-strip system which when fitted into the beads and junctions of the sashes makes a better & more draught-proof and energy efficient fit. The nice thing about this system is that the brush-strips can be replaced separately if they eventually wear.
We can completely decorate windows and doors and other timberwork, fascias, soffits, gutters and downpipes.
Lanterns:
We have completely re-made and repaired the roof mounted glass lanterns which allow the beautiful natural lighting of many georgian stairwells.
We can repair and refurbish metal and Crittal windows.
Window Shutters:
Of increasing interest with the recent drive to improve energ efficiency in our buildings is the reinstatement or repair of window shutters. Corbel can get them functioning or make new replacements. |
