The main reason people look to clean the masonry of their buildings is to enhance the appearance.
Equally important is to remove non-porous paints which may be causing damp problems or could lead to deterioration of the masonry.
Build-up of grime and blackening from pollution can also cause deterioration of the masonry.
Rest assured, with Corbel Conservation Ltd, your building and particularly delicate stone structures are in safe hands. We have focussed on the use of specialised techniques for the removal of surface dirt and pollution whilst minimising the risk of decomposition. We use arange of different techniques for different jobs, including that of poulticing and the use of timed-sprays.
The DOFF cleaning system is often regarded as the best solution of the careful removal of paints, grime and graffitti from stone, brick, concrete, etc.
The cleaning is by super-heated steam, which is hotter than boiling point because of the increased pressure. The clever combination of heat and pressure cuts through and removes the unwanted material. The controllability of the equipment and skill of the operator minimise the possibility of eroding or damaging the stone surface underneath.
The limitations are that cement based coatings and limewashes aren't removed. In more extreme and less sensitive cases the JOSTORC air abrasive system or other blasting can be applied.
Poultices:
Poultices can be used to either soften or draw out certain pollutants and blackening that may form a threat of damage or staining to masonry and sculptures.
Often paper, clay or cotton fibres are used along with special chemicals in making the poultice.
Special Chemical cleaning:
We are experienced in cleaning stone using specialist soaps, chemicals and pastes. These are applied and removed carefully to remove grime gently and avoid dirt staining adjacent stone or being forced deeper into the stone matrix. |
