Wattle is a composition of small timbers, built-up to form a panel that can support a mud or lime based Daub. There are two types of timbers. The initial timbers ( Staves) are securely fastened within the frame or panel. The second layer of timbers (withies) are usually attached to the staves by weaving, tying or nailing. The Daub is applied from both sides, being pressed into the wattle in order to form a consistent layer. The daub can be later keyed and wetted to take a lime plaster. |
